Luna (2009), for viola and piano
Program Notes:
Luna is a sonata for viola and piano very loosely based on the Shostakovich viola sonata, which is in turn loosely based on Beethoven’s “Moonlight Sonata.” Though Luna uses very different compositional methods, it aims for the same dark and serene feel that both Beethoven and Shostakovich achieved in their music.
The first movement is a noisy, bombastic competition between the two instruments. After the brief introduction, the viola assumes the leading role, followed by a
passage with the piano in the fore. The two compete for the listener’s attention, with the viola emerging superior and taking a victory lap cadenza. The contrastingly calm interlude transitions to the tranquil second (and primary) movement, to which the title refers.
