Starfish (2008), for cello, prepared piano and percussion

Program Notes:
I have a vivid memory of watching a nature show about ocean life on TV several years ago. Though not programmatic (the music isn’t about starfish), this show planted ideas in my mind that I eventually incorporated into this piece: First, real-time footage of starfish was shown. Of course, they move so slowly that you cannot even tell that they are moving at all. But speed up the footage to many times the original tempo and they exhibit a surprisingly wide range of fascinating characteristics and individuality – even personality.
