Christmas Suite (2008), for wind ensemble
Program Notes:
The idea behind my Christmas Suite is that of a set of musical puns – the juxtaposition of melodies from various popular Christmas tunes alongside the accompaniment of three famous compositions:
The first movement includes themes from Deck the Halls, Angels we Have Heard on High, Have a Holly Jolly Christmas and What Child is This?,and is based on the first movement March from Gustav Holst’s 1922 “Second Suite in F.”
The second movement incorporates the melody of Little Drummer Boy alongside the accompaniment of Maurice Ravel’s 1928 Bolero.
The third movement incorporates the tune I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas set against the context of John Phillip Sousa’s 1888 march Semper Fidelis.
