I saw The Rise of Skywalker for a second time on Monday. As much as I wanted to bring my portable recorders, I understand and respect that doing so would be illegal, so I had to do it the old-fashioned way: I took 30 pages of handwritten notes on the plot and the music, which I've edited, revised, and posted below. The underlined time stamps are the film's timeline (ex: 1:14 means one hour and fourteen minutes into the film), while boldface text refers to the soundtracks (ex: OST, track 14, 3:27 means that that music can be heard on the original soundtrack at 3:27 on the fourteenth track; FYC, track 6, 2:49 means that that music can be heard on the For Your Consideration soundtrack at 2:49 on the sixth track). I'll be seeing the film again next week, and no doubt adding to this timeline. Anybody out there in cyber space who can fill in some of the blanks (or make any corrections), please do so in the comments :-)

Having only seen the movie once, I can't be sure, though is the second half of the OST Track 1 out of place? Isn't this music actually used later in the film when Rey is on the Death Star?

That's correct. The portion of music right after the Main Title is not the same in the movie than in the album. The right "Prologue" section is the one that appears in the FYC version of the soundtrack as Track 01, with the full Kylo's Theme followed by the fast paced music as Kylo flies his starship. I really don't know why the album soundtrack editions use to do this crappy and confusing things.

I only found this blog a few weeks ago, and I must say, it's a treasure and a treat for someone like me, both a Star Wars geek and a longtime aficionado of symphonic music (11 years in band will do that). One note: I've only seen the film once, and the spot in question is not on the soundtrack, so I can't be sure, but that moment at 1:14 in the movie where Rey reaches the destroyed throne room in Death Star: The Sequel....is that the same musical cue as Darth Vader's death scene, possibly lifted straight from the Return of the Jedi score? It sure sounds really similar. For comparison, see the 1997 special edition of the RotJ soundtrack, disc 2, track 8 (Battle of Endor III), starting around the 2:46 mark (or a track titled Darth Vader's Death in some other RotJ and trilogy releases, around the 1:06 mark). Thoughts?

You are 100% correct. That music is straight from ROTJ when Vader passes aboard the Death Star.

This is fantastic. Thanks for putting this together. I have one question for you that has been driving me nuts. How in the name of The Force could they not include this music on the OST? It blows my mind. It'd be like the Endgame score not having the Portals music on the OST.

I agree with Erin... that cue NEEDED to be there... I think is the only time the main theme is featured in full scale in any scene in the whole saga... is like Williams knew he was going to score 9 movies and saved it for the last.
