Ian MacDonald's Numbering System

Ian MacDonald's book Revolution in the Head: The Beatles' Records and the Sixties is commonly regarded as one of the best analyses of the Beatles recordings. I, however, have never been able to understand why the book is so highly acclaimed because (a) the text is riddled with factual errors and suffers greatly from unsupported personal opinions and editorializing instead of objective research and analysis, and (b) there are much better books available (Tim Riley's "Tell Me Why", Steve Turner's "A Hard Day's Write", and what is hands-down the best Beatles analysis ever written Walter Everett's "The Beatles as Musicians"). That being said, I do find MacDonald's numbering system of the Beatles' released songs to be extremely helpful when attempting to sort through the band's recordings on a macro scale. His system provides logical structure based on chronology of recording (which, of course, does not necessarily coincide with chronology of release). Each original song is given its own number, with covers/arrangements of others' works given an extra letter (see below for examples). Thus from now on I will adopt MacDonald's numbering system when working on analyses that span the band's entire recorded and released output.
